This is my favourite story from teaching last year:
I mentioned in passing to my class of 20 middle school students that I have a wife.

One kid (with an underdeveloped pre-frontal cortex) says loudly “uhhh, don’t you mean HUSBAND??”
I said “no, I mean wife. It’s 2023, have you heard about gay people?”
The other 19 kids thought it was absolutely hilarious. The kid who said it turned out to really enjoy the class, and definitely learned something.
I don’t really celebrate Pride in a big way, it’s not my style. But I do hope that I am providing good representation to all the kids (& adults) that I interact with. Representation in media is important, but so are the everyday people you’re around. And that’s all year long, not just in June 🤟🏼
